First Day of School Information

Hello Falcons!

THIS MESSAGE IS LENGTHY, BUT IT CONTAINS A GREAT DEAL OF SPECIFIC INFORMATION FOR YOU.

Distance Learning classes begin Monday, August 10 at 7:30 AM!

To kick off the year right, we have the Distance Learning Bell Schedule to assist you with the first day of classes. CLICK HERE to see the Distance Learning Bell Schedule.

Student Schedules:

  • Student schedules can be seen in PowerSchool.
  • Students who have a problem with their schedule (wrong class, missing class, etc.) can request a course change using the Schedule Change Request 20-21 form.
  • Please note that there will be changes to student schedules throughout the next three weeks. This is a normal process that allows us to balance classes to ensure there is not overcrowding.
  • Thank you for your patience as we make these adjustments.

Student Login Help:

  • There is a link on the PHS website for students to request assistance with PowerSchool or Google login information. We have a team that will work through the list daily to assist the students.
  • They will select the "Contact Us" button to inform us of their need, and we will monitor and provide support as the requests come in.

Registration:

  • Live registration is available Monday - Thursday of next week from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
  • Parents will park in the 400 parking lot. Enter on Ave. R on the West end of the campus.
  • Student Information Form and Student Health Questionnaire will be completed in Computer Lab 401.
  • Parents will then walk through the 400 hallway to the large gym to register.

Technology Needs:

  • We will be passing out Chromebooks on Monday and Tuesday of next week. We currently do not have any hotspots available but we are expecting a delivery of more very soon. Keep checking our website for more information.
  • Parents will drive up the bus route off of 20th Street East.
  • Chromebooks will be issued in front of the large gym.

Textbooks:

  • We do not intend to mass-issue textbooks that have online versions.
  • For books without an online version, and where your teacher determines you need to have a textbook, we will do limited textbook issue on a subject-by-subject basis.
  • Students who need a physical copy of a book due to accommodations, expressed needs, parent request, or other factors, will be issued all of their textbooks by appointment only!

As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns you might have!

Regards,

AVUHSD Open Enrollment

If you would like to attend a high school within the Antelope Valley Union High School District other than your school of residence, you will need to apply for "Open Enrollment" no later than Friday, March 15, 2019.

During the last week of February 2019, Open Enrollment application packets for the new 2019-20 school year were mailed to the homes of current eighth grade public school students, returning high school students, and to the principals of charter and private junior high schools. Application packets are also available at all local high schools, in the AVUHSD Student Services office located at 548 W. Lancaster Blvd. in Lancaster, and on the AVUHSD website at https://www.avdistrict.org/parents/open-enrollment .

Open Enrollment applications for the 2019-20 school year must be received by the deadline of Friday, March 15, 2019 in the Student Services office at 548 West Lancaster Boulevard, Suite #102, Lancaster, CA 93534-2571 (note that the office closes at 4:30pm). Applications may be submitted by mail, in person, or by fax to 661-949-6292. They may also be scanned and e-mailed to: rhickman@avhsd.org. According to Board Policy, late applications will not be accepted with the exception of students who have a sibling attending the school requested. However, late applications from students who moved into the area after the deadline may be considered based on available space. Result letters will be mailed in April 2019.

There will be a limited number of 2019-20 Open Enrollment spaces available at each high school: Antelope Valley, Eastside, Highland, Knight, Lancaster, Littlerock, Palmdale, and Quartz Hill High Schools. These include general Open Enrollment spaces as well as some spaces specific to particular academies: AVHS Engineering/Green Enterprise Academy, EHS Biomedical Sciences Academy, HHS Public Service Academy, KHS Digital Design & Engineering Academy, Lancaster HS Multimedia and Engineering Academy, Littlerock HS Agribusiness Academy, PHS Engineering Academy, and PHS Health Careers Academy. Also, qualified students entering 11th grade may apply for the QHHS International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Students interested in career academies must also submit a separate academy application through the Academy Coordinator at the requested school. According to California Education Code 35160.5, Open Enrollment approvals will be on a lottery basis (random selection—not first come, first served). In addition to these spaces, all qualified sibling Open Enrollment applications to all schools will be approved.

SAT resized

Next Wednesday, March 6, 2019, the AVUHSD is providing all 11th graders the opportunity to take the SAT during the regular school day. The SAT is accepted at all U.S. colleges and measures what students are learning in high school, as well as what they need to know to succeed in college and future careers. We are pleased to offer the SAT on a school day for all our Juniors so that:

• Students are more comfortable and confident by testing in a familiar place.

• Students don’t have to worry about logistics of getting to a test center.

• Students don’t have to worry about weekend conflicts or disrupting family time.

Please encourage your student to get a good night’s sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast before the test.
